Waste Water Treatment BOD Toxicity Analysis Equipment

What BOD means and how it is measured.

The biological or biochemical oxygen demand indicates the amount of oxygen which is needed for the biological degradation of organic substances in water.

Generally, the BOD5 is perceived as the BOD for controlling waste water treatment plants (WWTP). However there are nitrification inhibitors added to the BOD5 to surpress the nitrogen degradation. Obviously, the nitrification is an important part of the biological degration of organics and thus is very important for the control of WWTPs. Consequently, the BOD5 ist poorly suited for the control of waste water treatment plants.

Alternatively, the total BOD is well-suited, due to the determination of the nitrogen as well as the carbonaceous part of biological degradation.

What Toxicity is and how it is determined.

Toxicity is described as the direct harmful effect of a substance on organisms. These effects can already occur at low concentraions of toxic substances and are dependent on the incubation period and the dosage.

Some test methods that are available on the market can detect toxicity. They do not, however, identify exactly which toxins are present. By using fish, daphnia, molluscs, algae or luminous bacteria, they test whether a water sample has a toxic effect on the organisms.

Online BOD for optimal waste water treatment plant control.

LAR's BioMonitor is the ultimate online BOD Analyser for the determination of biological oxygen demand (BOD) & respiration.

The miniature waste water treatment plant. Use of the own activated sludge.

Similar to the functional principle of a biological treatment plant, the waste water to be tested is mixed with activated sludge and air and continuously passed through the measurement cascade. Upon exiting the reactor cascade, the residual oxygen of the air is carried out and is measured with an oxygen sensor, wherein the volume flows of waste water, activated sludge and air are well defined or controlled. Important in this process is that the system's activated sludge is used to actually simulate the biology of the plant. Thus, the measurement results are of special relevance to the circumstances of the treatment plant and are always directly proportionate to their specific characteristics.

The total BOD.

In contrast to the standard BOD5 method the BioMonitor measures the total BOD. In the BOD5 measurement nitrification inhibitors are added to the sample, which suppress the degradation of nitrogen compounds. This results in the determination of the degradation of carbon compounds (carbonaceous-BOD) only. The nitrification part is not considered in BOD5 measurements.

As a waste water treatment plant can be reliably controlled and monitored only by the determination of total BOD, the BOD5 is insufficient for this purpose.

Alternatively to the BOD5 measurement LAR AG provides an online respirometer, which operates like a miniature waste water treatment plant: The BioMonitor.

The BOD analyser degrades nitrogen and carbon compounds in special waste water cascades, so that the meaningful total BOD can be determined within 4 minutes.

The BioMonitor. Ultra quick measurements and maintenance.

The measurement of the BOD takes place in less than 4 minutes and therefore it is faster than the BOD5 measurement, which requires 5 days. This speed guarantees that very short peaks can be determined very well during a daily cycle.

Measurement Principle Explained

  1. Measurement results are displayed on the Analyser screen (human interface).
  2. The aerated mixture of activated sludge and sample is pumped through the four reactors.  The O2 sensor determines the oxygen consumed during decomposition.
  3. The activated sludge is aerated and its respiration is determined (ASR).

Online Toximeter that protects the biology of waste water treatment plant. Especially the nitrification process.

Nitrification is the stage in biological waste water treatment where certain bacteria oxidise ammonium to nitrate. These bacteria are called nitrifiers. Due to their high sensitivity toxic loads can affect them very easily. Toxicity is the most common disturbance to this important treatment process. A failure within the nitrification not only leads to a breakdown of treatment processes, but can cause an increased discharge of ammonia into rivers and lakes causing fish to die. The fast and reliable monitoring of incoming loads for toxicity warns of the danger in time, helping to protect the biological treatment processes.

LAR's toxicity analyser NitriTox continually monitors water treatment plants for pollutants. Potential toxins in water are determined through the reaction of highly sensitive bacteria. The measurements follow at  intervals of less than 5 minutes. Thus allowing enough time to introduce countermeasures after the occurance of pollution. What's more, the NitriTox offers three warning levels, which can be individually set.

The bacteria are self-reproducing. In this case a huge advantage.

NitriTox contains a bacteria culture, which constantly and independently produces Biomass. This means that there is always enough bacteria for each new measurement. Furthermore, the risk of the fermenter being contaminated is removed because every water sample is tested with a fresh amount of bacteria

Robust toxicity analyser. Sensitive test organisms.

The bacteria are extremely sensitive to a multitude of toxins. Through their reaction to the harmful substances in the water sample, toxicity can be reliably determined. For example, a reaction already starts at a cyanide concentration of less than 0.10 mg/litre.

Reduced maintenance. No further purchases necessary.

Firstly, it is not necessary to purchase or externally cultivate test organisms, such as fish or daphnia. Secondly, the toxicity analyser is extremely low in maintenance because the bacteria mass constantly proliferates on its own.

The nitrification respiration inhibition test. Simpler than its name.

The bacteria live on (consume) oxygen from the conversion of ammonia to nitrate, which is why they are described as nitrifiers. NitriTox measures this oxygen consumption.

Toxic substances in the sample contents inhibit the respiration of the bacteria, thus lowering their oxygen consumption.

The NitriTox monitors this oxygen consumption and hence the toxicity.
